Phnom Penh & PM: Increasing green cover and clearing the sidewalks in the city

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has made several recommendations to promote modern urban development and address the increasing trend of urbanisation.

Recommandations are as follow:

Construction of physical infrastructure in the city

Regarding the construction of physical infrastructure in the city, the relevant ministries, institutions and the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration should continue to implement based on two priority principles:

1) accelerate the city’s development by anticipating people’s needs and increasing investment in line with the Master Plan for Phnom Penh Land Use 2035.

2) consider the construction of each building in accordance with the evolving needs of economic and social development.

Modern, smart and highly economical technologies

Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will continue to explore the use of modern, smart and highly economical technologies in various physical infrastructure projects in Phnom Penh. This includes the installation of security cameras, solar lights and automatic irrigation systems in public parks to enhance the attractiveness and luxury of the city, making it worthy of being an ASEAN Smart City.

Increase green cover in the city

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will increase green cover in the city to reduce heat and greenhouse gases, especially in construction areas where new physical infrastructure is planned, such as planting more trees at the base of the Chroy Changvar Bridge on the West Bank and the Moradok Techo flyover project.

Implementation of investment plans for drainage infrastructure systems

The Prime Minister spoke on Monday morning during the groundbreaking ceremony for the twin flyovers at the intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard and National Road No. 2.

Implementation of investment plans for drainage infrastructure systems

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will work to promote the implementation of investment plans for drainage infrastructure systems and water release systems to divert rain floods in the Phnom Penh area, thereby increasing our city’s resilience to climate change. In addition, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will continue to inspect and resolve issues related to the drainage system, wells and canals, while ensuring readiness to intervene in the event of rain floods and other potential emergencies.

Implementation of the "Safe Village – Commune – District" policy

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will continue to focus on the implementation of the "Safe Village – Commune – District" policy, a key priority of the Royal Government to strengthen security and public order, such as cracking down on burglars, thieves, robbers and gangsters in schools and communities, etc., to ensure the safety of residents and national-international tourists, which means continuing to take action on a regular basis without exception.

Clearing the sidewalks in the city

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will focus on completely clearing the sidewalks in the city to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, with the aim of reducing travel costs, promoting the use of bus services and reducing environmental impact in the city. In addition, during rush hours, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration must deploy traffic police to reduce traffic until the traffic situation stabilises, thereby minimising inconvenience to citizens.
