Economy: BYD plans to open an automotive assembly plant in Cambodia

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet confirmed that BYD, a publicly listed Chinese multinational manufacturing company, has plans to establish a plant in the Kingdom.

At a gathering and solidarity dinner with Cambodian small and medium enterprises and handicrafts in Phnom Penh on 27 June, on the occasion of the First National Day of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that this is positive news for Cambodia, in addition to the existing plants of Ford, Toyota, etc.

At the same time, the Prime Minister continued to urge the private sector, particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, to collaborate further with the Royal Government to achieve the country’s development goals.

Cambodia currently has six automotive assembly plants, including Daehan Auto Manufacturing (Ssangyong), RMA Automotive (Ford), Camko Motor (Hyundai), HGB Motors Assembly (Kia), GTV Motor (GTV), and Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Fortuner and Hilux).

From January to May 2024, Cambodia had imported vehicles valued at approximately US$385 million.
